Parent/Teen Challenge Day

Research by Steinberg et al., (1991, 1992) demonstrates that throughout adolescence three specific components of parenting contribute to healthy psychological development and school success: parental acceptance or warmth (feeling loved), behavioral supervision and strictness (feeling protected even from themselves and outside pressures), and psychological autonomy granting or democracy (feeling heard and valued). Parent Teen Challenge’s impact on the family extends beyond the home to the classroom and our community.

The Adolescent Life Coaching Center (ALCC), a 501 (c) 3 non-profit organization that opened in February 2008 and since has served more than 700 families in conflict due to adolescent issues.  The ALCC would like to offer Seminole County Public High School families the chance to participate in Parent/Teen Challenge Day. This programs effectiveness’ is surpassing expectations as recorded by hundreds of testimonials from participants.  The Seminole County Sherriff’s Office has adopted Parent/Teen Challenge as a prosecution alternative for 1st time offenders and it is mandatory if assigned to Operation Right Track.

The ALCC has gained expertise in reconnecting families in turmoil due to adolescent issues through fun, reflection, confrontation, and healing. When parents and teens are both tired and feel disconnected and unheard, this provides a recipe for emotional, hurtful communication. The ALCC’s Parent/Teen Challenge facilitates the breakdown of the walls built of pride, resentment, resistance to change, and stubbornness. Inside those walls lay isolation, silence, and loneliness that get built up from existing together with unhealthy communication patterns.  Parent/Teen Challenge has a proven format with hundreds of testimonials from families that are now enjoying each other due to this experience.
Parent/Teen Challenge Focuses on:

  • Reflection: Parents and teens get involved in activities that all lead to self reflection and taking self-inventory on how to be the hero that creates change.
  • Empathy: Parents and teens learn about each other’s stressors and gain understanding and empathy.
  • Laughter: Parents and teens laugh, compete, talk, discuss, play, dance, imitate, and spend most of the day reconnecting and truly enjoying each other, which for many is the first time in years.
  • Trust: Parents and teens learn, listen, talk, trust, reveal, confide in each other as the walls break down near the final hours of the day. Knowing that we can’t change even a minute ago, parents and teens must trust in what each other commits to during the challenge.
  • Hope: Parents and teens feel hopeful and satisfied that they have new tools to stay connected and to keep communication productive and effective.  Parents and teens are offered weekly group aftercare.
